    Bratislava

Lying on the banks of the Danube River just 60km downstream from Vienna, Bratislava (Pressburg, Pozsony until 1919) with a population of almost 500.000 is the rapidly developing capital of Slovakia. Despite many common traditions with its bigger neighbour, Bratislava has a distinctly different, vibrant and youthful ambiance.

The city prospered from its location on crossroads on major trade routes. It gained further importance when present day Budapest was taken by the Ottomans and all central Hungarian offices were moved here in the course of the 16th century. Bratislava’s charming Old Town with its cosy squares, narrow alleys and romantic courtyards as well as the mighty Castle bear testimony to the city‘s rich past when it was the capital of the Hungarian Kingdom and coronation town of the Hungarian Kings.

Thanks to its unique location in a corner between three nations – Slovakia, Austria and Hungary, Bratislava has been traditionally multilingual and cosmopolitan. It possesses old world charm and shares the common Habsburg heritage of great architecture, rich musical traditions and tasty food, where Slovak, Hungarian and Austrian influences overlap. Located between such important cultural centres as Vienna, Prague and Budapest, it is this microcosm of central Europe that makes Bratislava so captivating and inspiring for so many.

It may be little by comparison in size, but it is big in rich culture, business opportunities and youthful spirit. Hence the description Little Big City, which became Bratislava’s official slogan.

    Old Town Walking Tour

Our Discover Bratislava Tour starts with a Walking Tour of Bratislava’s Old Town takes in all the must-sees of this historic city. Starting at the elegant Opera House, our Guide takes you to the charming Main Square dominated by the medieval Old Town Hall and Bratislava’s oldest fountain. From the Main Square it takes you pass the Old Town Hall to another quiant square to visit Bratislava‘s largest palace – Primate’s Palace, formerly winter residence of Hungarian archbishops. The priceless complete set of 16th century royal English tapestries here on show was found in the palace during renovation by chance. The Tour continues through narrow winding alleys to Michalska ulica with the town’s only preserved town gate - St Michael’s Gate - towering at the street’s top end and burgher houses with romantic courtyards. The following Venturska ulica and surrounding streets are the musicians’ quarter where numerous famous music composers studied, lived or gave concerts, of whom Bartok, Liszt, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven were the most famous. Afterwards, you visit one of Bratislava’s landmarks and its largest church – the St. Martin’s Cathedral, where during 270 years 19 members of the Habsburg family where crowned to Hungarian kings. The tour finishes back at the Opera House.

    Panoramic Points & Bratislava Castle

After having seen the Old Town, the city’s main landmark – the Bratislava Castle - awaits you. Enjoy the panoramic drive by coach or car passing the Old Town walls and the elegant Presidential Palace. Further, you will be driven through a villa quarter to panoramic points to admire the stunning views of the the city.
Towering on a strategically located hill 85 metres above the Danube River, the Castle grounds have been continuously inhabited for more than 2000 years.  The oldest parts of the present Castle date from the 13th century, when a border castle was built here by Hungarian king only to be succeeded later by larger and ever more sumptuous structures. For over 270 years the Hungarian Royal Crown Jewels were stored and guarded here. The Castle saw its golden age in the 18th century during the reign of Queen Maria Theresa, when it was transformed into her summer resindence in Hungary. Enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views and learn more about Bratislava in general.
