    Čičmany

This Tour will take you along the Váh River Valley passing several medieval castles before turning into the moutains and driving through dense forests to the isolated village of Čičmany, which in the past lived mainly from raising sheep and wood cutting.

    Čičmany

Almost 140 timbered houses have been preserved in this small isolated place in the middle of the forested mountains. Of particular interest are the unique white patterns which are painted on the exterior wall of the houses featuring animal and plant motifs as well as runes which were used for decoration and as a protection from evil spitits in the dark woods. This is the only place in Slovakia, where such external decor on timber houses can be seen. Apart from the rustic architecture, the village is also noted for the richly decorated folk costumes that the locals wear on various festive occasions, which can be seen at the small local museum. Before departing for Chateau Bojnice, enjoy the local tasty food in one of the village‘s typical taverns.

    Chateau Bojnice

A short drive from Čičmany will take you to the town of Bojnice to experience quite a different lifestyle from Čičmany - the romantic, fairy-tale like Chateau Bojnice. Originally built in the 12th century, the old castle had changed several owners and experienced many additions and renovations in the Gothic, Rennaissance and Baroque styles until Count Pálffy bought it in the 19th century and, inspired by chateaux on the Loire River in France, had it completely rebuilt into a magnificent estate. He did it, the legend has it, to impress a French noble lady, many years his junior. It was the condition of her father, who wanted the future son-in-law to offer her comparable living conditions she was used to from home. Unfortunately, Count Pálffy didn’t live long enough to see its completion.

    Bojnice

The well in the courtyard leads into spacious caves under the chateau with several ponds, which are source of many legends. The legends are revived annually in May during the Ghosts and Spirits Festival. Together with the neighbouring Zoo and a thermal spa, the chateau makes Bojnice one of Slovakia’s main tourist attractions.
